Overweight would be linked to an increased risk of periodontal disease, according to a study of the Thai population.

Being Overweight Would Promote Dental Problems

Obesity and overweight promote the risk of health problems such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disorders. But, it would seem that overweight also has an impact on dental health. An epidemiological study carried out on 160 overweight or obese patients in Thailand suggests that excess weight exposes an increased risk of dental infections such as periodontitis, an inflammation of tooth support tissues.

For the purposes of the study, the dental and periodontal health of the participants was examined by a specialist in oral medicine, who carried out a diagnosis of oral mucosal diseases. Blood tests as well as teeth radios were performed on the panel.

Patients with obesity (body mass index> 30) had almost 6 times more risk of severe periodontitis compared to people with normal weight. Among those overweight, the risk of dental inflammation was more than tripled compared to subjects with normal BMI. Overweight or obese Thais also had a higher rate of inflammation markers in the blood.

The Importance Of Good Oral Hygiene

The results of this study published in the journal Oral diseases go beyond the work done so far on the relationship between overweight and oral diseases. “No previous study has explored all diseases of the dental, periodontal and oral mucosa in relation to blood profile and inflammatory markers in obese or overweight people,” observed Dr Supanee Thanakun’s team of Mahidol University in Bangkok, Thailand.

Of infectious origin, periodontal disease affects and destroys the tissues supporting the teeth (gums and bones), recalls the Oral Health Union (OHU). This pathology, which is often established at the age of 30 years, can be stabilized with good oral hygiene but can not be cured.
